# BaseETH

## Overview

BaseETH ( Base Ethereum) is a Layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum built by Coinbase using the OP Stack, the same technology powering Optimism. Base uses optimistic rollup technology to process transactions off-chain while posting compressed data to Ethereum mainnet for security.

Base implements EVM equivalence at the bytecode level through the Optimism Virtual Machine. The network uses sequencers to order transactions and achieve fast block times. Base inherits Ethereum's security through a fraud proof window during which invalid state transitions can be challenged. The network uses ETH for gas fees and supports all Ethereum transaction types including EIP-1559.

## Units

Each BaseETH consists of `1,000,000,000,000,000,000` (<code>10<sup>18</sup></code>) wei, so not even a single BaseETH can be stored numerically without exceeding the range of JavaScript numbers. Gas fees use gwei.

- 1 BaseETH = <code>10<sup>18</sup></code> wei
- 1 wei = <code>10<sup>-18</sup></code> BaseETH
- 1 gwei = <code>10<sup>-9</sup></code> BaseETH

For that reason, only string balance properties are available, which are `balanceString`, `confirmedBalanceString`, and
`spendableBalanceString`.
